Not much to say about it aside from that the Steam SDK has been implemented, some achievements were added.
Recently the movement speed curve has also been adjusted so lower dexterity characters have generally become faster.

Sarducaa Release, May 17th 2015

The long awaited big patch that will introduce the second continent Sarducaa will finally release on this Sunday, May 17th 2015.

In addition to Sarducaa there will be new creatures, new things to discover, many more items, supposedly improved AI and a lot of stepping stones for other systems to be introduced in the future. Sarducaa will also bring with it the new Heat system that will force you to consider your surroundings more when moving around in the open.

It’s one of the – if not the the biggest content patches, I’d say, since release. But in my opinion people expect too many immediate changes from it and setting their expectations too high.

For me all the Sarducaa patch introduces is new things to explore including a new continent that is bigger than Myrland, a lot of other content to play around with, especially with the new creatures and hopefully improved AI. The rest for me is pretty much just a stepping stone and getting closer to the Magic Revamp and more actual content. The heat system will mostly apply to Sarducaas hot temperatures, Myrland will mostly stay temperate. I know that a lot of people expect miracle balance and things like that which was never what they said it would be about.

The patch also won’t just let you go over to Sarducaa in an instant, the community will have to combine their efforts to rebuild the Bridge between the continents for anyone to get over for the time being. This might as well take a prolonged time and turn into a slaughter fest. It will be interesting to see what the community does about it.

For a landmass I’m personally still more looking forward to Nordveld and the cold climate. Blainn and Kallard for life. 😉

They have also released a lot of lore for Sarducaa, which I have linked below.

Star Vault has already released the updated client as a standalone torrent for you to pre-load and the automatic patches for the patch system will go life on Sunday.
Be advised that the standalone torrent is not the best way to update and you won’t be able to use an updated client until Sunday so trying to update before that will render your client useless until Sunday.

Either way, if you have any opinion on this post it in the comment section.
I hope to see a few of you old timers back and new people are always welcome.
Join us on the community IRC channel and see you all on the continent, and before that on the bridge!

Summary of some of the features (More in the updates below):

  • Sarducaa is approximately 85 square kilometers. Myrland is 64.
  • We have added around 100 new NPCs and AI for you to encounter.
  • 20 new titles for you to find.
  • 30 new fishes have been added.
  • 5 new fully craftable armors have been added to the game.
  • 5 new songs have been added to the soundtrack
  • There are 300+ new items to find.
  • The internal patch notes have over 300 entries.
  • We have added around 4 gigabytes of new content.

Unity 5 Release and you get all the features for free, just as Unreal Engine 4 becomes free as well

Unity 5 just got release a bit ago and even the free Version (Personal Edition) includes all of the technical features of Unity Pro. So they did finally react to the cheap subscription fee that had many people go to Unreal Engine 4.
Unity 5 Professional Edition offers extended support and services, better team features, monthly free assets, access to beta version, the source code and more.

So far I haven’t had any problems letting Unity upgrade my old projects and automatically converting settings and code to the new conventions (aside from some third party plugins).

Comparison (Free vs. Pro): http://unity3d.com/get-unity?utm_source=unity3d&utm_medium=blog&utm_campaign=unity_5_launch_blog&utm_content=license

Shortly before this there was an announcement that Unreal Engine 4 is now also free.

So now Game Developers and other  visual simulations developers both as a hobby and professionals have all the options available and can choose whatever they like to make awesome things.
This can only be a good thing and I’m looking forward to the amazing things this will bring us. And obviously my own development efforts. 😉

The official inofficial Mortal Online IRC channel

I’d like to invite you all to the official inofficial Mortal Online IRC channel located on Quakenet.

Quakenet is a big and established gaming network that has been around for decades. We also already have some people from the MO Community around having lively discussions and even Henrik joins in once in a while. This is your chance to change things up and be part of the crowd filling the community-driven channel.

The channel will be maintained by the community, this means for now I will be moderating it. I’ve been an active member of the Mortal Online community since April of 2008 and I’ve also been an official IRC moderator in the dawn of Mortal Online back on privnet from September of 2008 up to the Mortal Online open beta back in 2010.

Other users can prove themselves by means of activity and the way they conduct themselves and be promoted to moderators. Common sense rules and Mortal Online rules apply, but they will be enforced by the community and not some forum moderators who hardly know what IRC is and what’s actually going on. Aside from that everyone is welcome and free discussions and conversations are encouraged.

Trade is also welcome and if need be additional channels for specific means can be opened. I am looking forward to help with and promote events and other community activities in there.

The official IRC channel has been dying off because of server issues and lack of general activity and I’d like to revive direct community interaction in an open and “friendly” environment. I’ve also talked to Star Vault and if we get enough activity they will come by there as well.

IRC is still the best way to hold direct real-time conversations  with a bigger group and community and still keep track of what has been said in the past.

See you over there!

Pros (in comparison to the official IRC channel)

  • Community-driven
  • More open discussions
  • More active and fair moderation
  • Big and established gaming IRC network
  • It’s not (ex-)Stratics

Cons (in comparison to the official IRC channel)

  • Not official
  • No devs (Henrik has been around from time to time)

Small Update on Game Engines and Technology

Just a bit ago the Unreal Engine 4 turned free for colleges and universities.
Unreal Engine Educational License

At the recent Unite 2014 the Unity team released a public beta of Unity 4.6. Which features the long awaited new GUI system.
The first Unity 5 beta build has been said to be sent to pre-order customers in the next few weeks as well.
Unity 5 Information

Also recently the Oculus Rift DK2 has been shipped to most customers. We’ve got a few in our lab as well. It has gotten a few upgrades since the DK1 but there are still some problems with it and sadly it’s gotten even more inconvenient in some ways for people with glasses.
Oculus Rift DK2 Information

And a kickstarter for Project PERCEPTION NEURON: Motion Capture, VR and VFX a wireless full body motion tracking system will end. Working with these kind of things and knowing what these systems usually cost – with way less features – this is pretty much a gift package if they can realize it. I’m tempted to get one myself for private use and development.

A look at new continents in Mortal Online

Mortal Online Map

Well it’s not really a direct look at any particular continent, it’s more of an evaluation of what it might bring to the table.
I’m not going to lie, I don’t like the priority or focus that a new continent is now getting over other features. I’ve been waiting for some features in Mortal Online for literally over half a decade by now. But I will put this aside and look at a new continent on it’s own from my point of view and also what it could mean for the Aegis Imperium and possibly other guilds.

We are a guild of achievers, explorers, people who like to figure things out and get shit done. New land will give us an incentive to go back to our roots again, go out and explore the new world, maybe even create new maps. As the creation and placement of cities etc. is supposed to be out by then as well we might be able to finally build some more sophisticated settlements. I’d love to settle in the cold climate in the north that is Nordveld. But I could live with the jungles of Urmothâr (Lykia) or even the deserts of Sarducaa. The little lore and art we have concerning them makes them all interesting in their own ways.

There has always been one place on Myrland in the back of our minds ever since we’ve lost it to foul play (basically exploiting) and similar betrayals.
It might bring us new flora to discover and new fauna to tame and utilize. We might finally be able to leave some of that negative baggage of the many years we’ve spend with Mortal Online behind and start up something with a new spirit. We’ve been the first to build on Myrland let’s do it again!
Since there have already been some spoilers about boats, travel between continents might add many new possibilities. I know there have been quite some people looking for all things naval. Piracy anyone?

What do you guys think? What are you looking forward to do with a new continent. If you have not been playing will it bring you back to at least try it out?

Game Engine News from GDC 2014

GDC 2014 has brought us news from the most popular Game Engines on the market: Unreal Engine and Unity (+ CryEngine showcase)

Unreal Engine 4 Banner
Unreal Engine 4 has been released and it seems they scrapped the free UDK version in favor for their montly subscription model (19$ per month + 5% of your sales earnings) with full source code access in GitHub. Actually the  UDK is not even mentioned anywhere, so it’s all just speculation on my side but it can’t easily be found found on their website anymore and they recommend people starting new UDK project to give Unreal Engine 4 a try (https://www.unrealengine.com/products/udk/).
I think removing it would be a terrible idea but we’ll see how this goes for them.

Unity 5 has been announced for this year and is looking good. With new Shader Technology, Global Illumination, improved Audio, full WebGL support (no more browser plugin requirement), a 64 Bit Editor (finally) and much more.

CryTek is also adopting a subscription based model of 9,90 $/€ per user with no royalties for CryEngine. They have also put up a video showcase for you to enjoy. Other than that there isn’t much new information there.
I personally dislike it when Companies just slap the Dollar and Euro sign onto price values for a 1:1 conversion, in essence making Europeans pay more. We already pay more on hardware, don’t make us pay more on Software as well.

You best check out all the features of both engines for yourself.
Unity has become more and more popular in all kinds of applications over the years with these new features and no more UDK I foresee that Unity’s popularity will only increase further. I’ve used Unreal Engine before and I’ve been using Unity for projects for years now. In terms of work flow Unity has always been ahead of Unreal Engine. I hear from some sources this has gotten better in UE 4 but I’ll have to see for myself if I get the chance. In my opinion in the end with both engines the outcome highly depends on able developers more so than on the engines cutting-edge technologies. And good work flow helps this a lot.
