It's sort of a third person melee, first person shooter, real-time strategy hybrid. Each team takes a commander who handles research, gives orders, designates team leaders (officers), etc. Then your team has a choice of, six or so units, plus the Hellbourne units.
You take over gold mines, collect souls, receive gold and experience for kills. The characters are where most of the HoN characters come from (graphically/namewise). This was S2's game before they made HoN. The game is a lot of fun, and despite being dated still looks really great. It's frantic, fast, and very twitch based. Also dieing doesn't mean the end of the world for your team, like it does in HoN. It's a much more forgiving game.
Best of all, it's completely free. You can buy a $9.99 Premium Account, but the advantages gained with it are minimal and nowhere even close to game breaking. It plays like your typical RTS, destroy the enemies stronghold. It's very team based, in that a coordinated team will always win out over a pub team (unless that pub team happens to be very coordinated themselves). It's also not nearly as frustrating as HoN can be when it comes to finding good games.
Have you guys ever played Savage 2? Has it already gone out of style for AI? I'm playing it from time to time regardless. Anyways, come and play if you need a new game to try or an old one to come back to.
